Getting Filtered

I think I've been filtered by Ellul. Not because his concepts are too hard to understand (Ellul's technique isn't the hardest thing to understand. Neither are his thoughts on propaganda.) but because it is an absolute pain in the ass to stay engaged with his writings. I don't know if it's an academic writing style thing or if I'm at the limits of my reading comprehension. I know for a fact the latter happened with Christopher Lasch, but I don't remember hating it. Does anyone else have this issue? I decided to bit the bullet and just listen to Ellul's The Technological Society and propaganda and I find it so much easier to follow. What kind of heuristic do you use to figure out whether something is poorly written or just too difficult to read to be enjoyable. Sometimes they are one in the same, but how do you distinguish bad writing from difficult writing?
